[ARCHIVED] Early grads turned Mayors for the Day

Add another accomplishment onto the young careers of Kayla Price and Tristan Shea – in addition to earning a two-year associates degree before they even walk the stage at Porter Ridge High, they’re now both going to be Mayors for the Day of Indian Trail.

Indian Trail Mayor Michael Alvarez has extended the honor to Price and Shea, who graduated from South Piedmont Community College recently with associate’s degrees thanks to a program that lets high school students begin taking college courses early. The two will graduate from Porter Ridge in the next few days, before serving as Indian Trail’s honorary mayors on July 4, 2017, as part of the Town’s Independence Day parade and festivities. Both will take their mayoral accomplishments with them to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the coming months.

“We are very proud of Tristan and Kayla’s accomplishments,” Mayor Alvarez said. “Their hard work and dedication to education and their future success are an inspiration to all future students who attend UCPS. It will show them that with hard work you can achieve and even exceed the goals you set for yourself. We wish them success and happiness in their future endeavors.”

The two students were honored at the May 23 Indian Trail Town Council meeting, where Mayor Alvarez extended the special recognition. Shea was unable to attend. In addition to serving as Mayors for the Day, both Price and Shea will receive Keys to the Town at a special ceremony before the July 4 parade.
