[ARCHIVED] Input needed for Secrest Short Cut Road plan

Secrest Shortcut SAP - Open House Flyer

Union County and the Town of Indian Trail are developing a Small Area Plan for the Secrest Short Cut area to guide future growth near the Monroe Expressway interchange at Unionville-Indian Trail Road. The plan aims to reflect community priorities and guide economic development opportunities in the changing landscape.

A public open house is scheduled for Thursday, February 22nd from 6:00pm – 8:00pm. The event will be held at the Carriage House, located at 6308 Secrest Short Cut Road. Residents are encouraged to drop-in anytime to view planning opportunities, take a short survey, talk with staff, and collaborate with friends and neighbors. The open house will gather input about the types of development that are appropriate or needed for the Secrest Short Cut area, such as residential, retail and entertainment, commercial, parks and greenways.

The Secrest Short Cut study area is approximately 1,323 acres and the majority of land is undeveloped. About 25% of land is used for agriculture and much of developed land is for residential purposes. The new access provided by the Monroe Expressway will result in development pressure. Union County and the Town of Indian Trail are responsible for managing land use for most of the Secrest Short Cut area. Zoning code dictates how each property in the town or county can be developed, and they want to cooperatively approve and regulate development to best accommodate new development with consideration for area desires.

Gresham, Smith and Partners has been selected to provide engineering and planning services for the project. GS&P’s team of transportation engineers, transportation planners and landscape architects will deliver the project in three phases – community outreach and existing conditions analysis, framework for plan options and recommendations, and the final area plan – in order to determine the solution that will best support the county’s current and future needs.

Input from residents will be critical in helping guide the priorities and plan for the Secrest Short Cut area. The Town of Indian Trail and Union County will approve the plan in mid-2018.
